The solution for curly Strelitzia leaves

Do you notice that the leaves of your Strelitzia are curling? It is good that you are investigating what the cause could be. There are various reasons why the leaves can curl, but fortunately there are also solutions for this. Read the tips here that you can use immediately.

Possible causes
Curling leaves are common with Strelitzia. This plant species is a strong plant and therefore requires little care. If the leaves start to curl, this can be a sign that something is wrong. Below are the three possible causes described with tips on what you can do about it.

  • Too low humidity
The Strelitzia grows naturally in tropical areas with high humidity of up to 90%. The average humidity in the house is 55 to 60%. The air in the house can become drier due to the warm weather in the summer or in the cold weather when the heating is on. This can drop to 45%. This is half of the original habitat. The dry air in the house ensures that there is no moisture in the air and the Strelitzia leaves can react to this.

It is therefore advisable to increase the humidity. You can do this with a plant sprayer by spraying the leaves with water twice a week. Or use a humidifier.
  • Not enough water
Even with a handy water meter, a plant can sometimes get too little water. Sometimes you forget to check the water meter, but this can also result in the leaves curling. It is therefore important to check the water meter at least once a week to see if the plant needs water. In the summer, this can even be twice a week, because plants drink 3 times more water than in the winter. If the water meter is low, you can give 1 to 1.5 liters of water. Has the water meter still not dropped after 2 weeks? Then bleed the water meter.

Therefore, keep a close eye on the water meter, so that you know for sure that your plant has enough water. For example, set a reminder in your phone or stick a post-it with a reminder in a place where you often walk by.

  • Too much or too little light
Every type of plant has a light requirement . One plant likes to be in a place with a lot of indirect sunlight, while the other prefers to be four meters from the window. If the plant is not in the desired light requirement, the Strelitzia can react to this.

Therefore, place the Strelitzia in a light spot near a window facing South, West or East. But be careful with too much direct sunlight.
